It is with mixed emotions we share the news that, after six years in a leadership role with Assisi House, our Executive Director Megan Armentrout-Steward will be departing the organization in August 2025.

Megan will be stepping into the role of Executive Director for the new Greater Alton Community Development Corporation. We celebrate the opportunity for Megan to deepen her good work in her hometown of Alton, Illinois, as well as the expansion of the effort in our region to ensure housing for all.

At the same time, we recognize the void that Megan’s departure will leave is bigger than just the executive role. Megan joined Assisi House in 2019 as Program Director, our second ever full-time employee. During her tenure, we have opened four additional houses (Durant, Spring, Market, and Keokuk), more than doubling the number of residents we provide homes for.

Megan Armentrout-Steward has served Assisi House in a leadership role for over 6 years.
Megan Armentrout-Steward has served Assisi House in a leadership role for over 6 years.

Megan led the transition from a volunteer-run organization to one led by a combination of full-time staff and our essential volunteer community. As a result of her work and our changing needs, Megan was promoted to be our first Executive Director in 2023. Throughout her tenure, Megan has shown a deep understanding of the mission of Assisi House, and has spearheaded programming and staff development that creates the opportunity for our residents to come home to themselves after the trauma of homelessness.

Embracing Our Next Chapter

As Megan starts the next phase of her work, Assisi House wraps up its first 10 years working to Provide housing for unhoused or housing insecure individuals in small, communal settings where each person is treated with dignity and respect.

This next chapter for Assisi House provides a critical opportunity for us to consider how to evolve in order to sustain our work. In particular, we are reflecting on these key areas:

  • Scalability: Developing our programs to reach more individuals while maintaining the quality of care and support.

  • Staff and Volunteer Partnership: Strengthening our collaborative efforts with dedicated staff and volunteers who are the heart of our mission.

  • Fundraising: Innovating our fundraising strategies to ensure we have the resources necessary to support our resident community, and to provide to others the opportunity to live in a place where they have respite from the devastating effects of being unhoused.

We look forward to soon providing tangible opportunities for our residents, volunteers, partners and other stakeholders to weigh in and help us bring the vision for Assisi House's Next 10 Years to life.

For now, we invite you to join with us as we launch our search for a new executive leader for this exciting next phase of our organization’s development!
