Assisi Friends is a unique opportunity to walk alongside neighbors who have overcome significant life challenges and are now rebuilding their lives in the stability of affordable housing. Small groups of volunteers commit to preparing and sharing a simple evening meal once a month for one year in one of the seven homes operated by Assisi House.
More than just a meal, these evenings are about presence, conversation, and belonging. Around a shared table—much like any family gathering—relationships are formed, stories are exchanged, and community takes root.
The Immediate Goal - serving a hot, home cooked meal to our residents, a visible way of letting residents know a lot of folks care about them personally.
The Long-Term Goal – building up a sense of belonging and community in each of our houses.
What Participation Looks Like
-
Small, intentional groups: Assisi Friends serve in groups of three to five people, creating a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.
-
Meals prepared together in one of the seven Assisi Houses: Volunteers shop for and prepare the meal in the home’s kitchen, helping to create a true family-style experience. This shared time and preparation is an essential part of the experience.
-
Support along the way: A Resident Support Specialist will serve as your point of contact, offering guidance, kitchen access, and a brief orientation in advance of your group’s scheduled evening.
-
Care and respect: Volunteers complete a one-page application form and are asked to honor the privacy and dignity of all residents.
If you are seeking a meaningful way to make a difference—one rooted in relationship, compassion, consistency, and shared humanity—Assisi Friends invite you to the table.
