Exciting News!

We are pleased to announce the prospective opening of Assisi House 6 for November 12th of this year!

The Board approved leasing the former rectory across the courtyard from the building that we have occupied as Assisi House 1 since the Fall of 2014. The new building is in excellent condition and, after remodeling to install a number of fire-code improvements and several new bedrooms, we will open in November for occupancy by 17 men during the winter shelter period, and conversion to 13 permanent residents in the Spring of 2020.

Our landlord will be North City Church of Christ and its pastor, Rev. Robert Lawrence. We have established a wonderful relationship with Rev. Lawrence at Assisi 1 and expect this relationship to be even stronger as we enter into our second lease with his congregation. Rev. Lawrence led a door-to-door campaign in the immediate neighborhood to obtain the roughly 100 signatures that we needed for approval of our occupancy permit. He told us that he had only 2 rejections from homeowners while gathering the 100 signatures. This is an amazing tribute both to Rev. Lawrence's reputation in the community and to the positive force that Assisi House 1 has been in its almost 5 years of existence.

Renovation is underway on the rectory building. In addition to the "old pros" that are returning to donate their time for electrical, plumbing, plastering and carpentry work, we are hoping to attract painters, tapers, floor layers and general clean-up volunteers to assist in the renovation. Whether you have been part of our crews on previous projects or new to the scene, we would be delighted to have you join us in this effort.

Assisi House 5 Update

As we enter this new effort, we also want to express our gratitude to everyone who has been a part of the extraordinary success of Assisi House 5. Since its opening last Fall, our house in the South Grand neighborhood has experienced the lowest turnover and the most stable residencies in our 5 year history. Thanks to the Core team led by Laura Shields and assisted by our marvelous intern Kate Fortier and Resident Manager Wayne Landers who came from Assisi 1 to join us on South Grand, we have been blessed with a peaceful house and a number of personal transformations.
